Writing a book review can be a great way to share your thoughts and opinions on a book you’ve recently read. A review can be as short as a sentence or as long as several paragraphs. The length doesn’t matter, but the review itself means the world to an author. Assuming that a sentence is all ya got, then make the small effort to post it with your star rating. If you want to write more than “I love this book” or “it’s not for me”, here are a few ways a reader might add a “why” or a “because”.

  • A review can always begin with a few sentences that summarize the main plot or subject of the book, without giving spoilers.
  • Share your thoughts and feelings about the book. What did you like or dislike about it? Did you find it engaging or boring? Did it make you think or feel differently about something? Use specific examples if you can to support your thoughts.
  • Consider the author’s writing style, including the tone, pace, and use of language. Was the writing easy to understand? Did the author use interesting metaphors or analogies?
  • Critique the book’s structure, such as organization of the chapters, use of flashbacks, or overall pacing. Did the structure work well with the content of the book.
  • Identify a key theme or message in the book. Was the theme insightful or thought-provoking? Did you find the theme relevant or important?
  • Make a recommendation to potential readers. Would you recommend this book to others?
  • Remember to be honest in a review. And by the way, honest doesn’t necessarily mean a review in favor of a book or author, although all authors would be eternally grateful for your kind words. Critical reviews can also be honest. Your choice.

Fine. I’ll write a review. How do I post it to the right place?

The easiest thing to do is to return to the site where you purchased the book. Typically, on the book link that you want to review, there is a place to enter a review. Here are a few popular examples:

AMAZON:

Return to the book link and scroll down just before “More Item To Explore”. On the left, under existing “Customer Reviews”, you will see “Review This Product”. Click there and you will be taken to the review page. Input your overall Star rating, some sort of title (can be copied from your actual review), and add the written review. Submit.

GOODREADS:

Return to the book link. Scroll down to “Ratings & Reviews”. Click on “Write a Review”. Put in your rating and your review. Submit.

iTUNES:

Click “Rate and Review”, choose between one and five stars, include your review, and click Submit.

AUDIBLE:

Go to your “Library” page on the Audible site. Click “Write a Review” link next to the title you want to review. Add star count, title, then add your review. This process is very similar to Amazon.

One last offer here: IF anyone is looking for a book to review, I would be happy to trade reviews with anyone. The same goes for most of the authors here in our group. Let’s help each other!
